Cat & Dog Wellness Exams
The Importance of Pet Routine Exams
Regular wellness exams are essential for maintaining your four-legged companion's long-term health. Along with vaccinations, parasite prevention, and a balanced diet, routine checkups help give your pet the best chance at lifelong wellness.
By bringing your dog or cat in for regular checkups, our veterinarians can help prevent health issues or detect them early, when treatment is often more effective.
These visits also allow us to provide recommendations tailored to your pet’s specific needs and life stage.
What to Expect During an Exam
During your pet’s checkup, our veterinarians will perform a thorough physical examination to assess overall health and identify any signs of illness or discomfort.
We’ll also review your pet’s vaccination and parasite prevention status, discuss nutrition, and answer any questions you may have about their care at home.
Once your furry friend's exam has been completed, your veterinarian will take time to discuss any concerns they may have about your pet's overall health and talk to you about your dog or cat's nutritional requirements.
Pet checkups at our clinic in Kamloops typically include an examination of each of the following elements of your pet's health:
-
General Condition
Your pet's general demeanour and physical condition can provide vital clues to their overall health. How they stand and walk, their level of alertness, and whether they are a healthy weight for their size are all important indicators of overall health.
-
Coat & Skin
During your pet's checkup, your veterinarian will examine your dog or cat's skin and coat for signs of problems, including excessive oiliness or dryness, lumps, bumps, dandruff, or abnormal hair loss.
-
Face & Head
Your pet's checkup will include an examination of their eyes, ears, and nose. Your veterinarian will look for any abnormalities or unusual discharge in these areas.
-
Teeth & Mouth
We will check the teeth and mouth for symptoms of oral health concerns such as plaque buildup or periodontal disease to help determine if you pet requires dental care.
-
Internal Health
Heart rate and rhythm, pulse, and blood pressure are essential elements of your pet's heart health. We'll check these to ensure they're normal. The lungs will then be examined for evidence of abnormal breathing.
Lymph nodes will be checked for pain or swelling, and we will also examine the abdomen to ensure the intestines, kidneys, bladder, spleen, liver, and stomach all feel normal, and that your pet is not exhibiting any signs of discomfort.
Checkups for Puppies & Kittens
Early veterinary care is vital for puppies and kittens. During your cat or dog's first few visits, we’ll perform a complete physical exam, provide necessary vaccinations and deworming, and screen for intestinal parasites.
Once your puppy or kitten's first checkup is complete, you will need to bring them in periodically for their required boosters.

Checkups for Seniors
As cats and dogs grow older, regular wellness exams play a key role in supporting their comfort and overall quality of life. During senior checkups, our veterinarians assess for age-related changes, including arthritis, diabetes, or vision issues.
We may also recommend additional lab tests to gain a clearer understanding of your senior pet’s health and to help develop a care plan tailored to their specific needs.
